  2. Two group comparisons were carried out using either a two-tailed Student’s t-test for age and APACHE II score or Fisher’s exact test for categorical variables (sex and survival). Chi-square test was applied for clinical variable insult. P values under the Total, Sepsis and ARDS heading refer to differences between races. Significance level was set at P ≤ 0.05
