Abnormally elevated circItgb5 levels can activate two pathways. On the one hand, circItgb5 sponges miR-96-5p to inhibit its activity. Decreased expression of miR-96-5p upregulates mTOR level, which promotes synthetic phenotype of PASMCs. On the other hand, circItgb5 enhances Uba1 protein expression, following Ube2n and Mdm2 activation. Mdm2 decreased ACE2 expression. Taken together, circItgb5 promotes synthetic phenotype of PASMCs, eventually resulting in pulmonary artery remodeling
