Denatonium-mediated antimicrobial peptide release is increased by blocking potassium channels. There is an increase in human β-defensin-2 (HBD-2) release from the apical surface of sinonasal ALI cultures treated with 1 mM denatonium benzoate plus K-channel blockers (apical 0.2 mM bupivacaine, basal 30 µM clofilium and 100 µM clotrimazole) compared to vehicle control (p = 0.00266), as well as a non-significant trend toward increased HBD-2 compared to 1 mM denatonium-benzoate alone or K-Channel blockers alone. Statistical significance determined by Kruskal–Wallis test followed Dunn’s multiple comparison with statistical significance p ≤ 0.05. Individual data points as well as median and interquartile range are shown
