  1. Detailed morphometric examination of the parenchyma at each age was performed by point counting at × 400 final magnification. Twenty images were examined from upper, middle and lower sections of each left lung following fixed-inflation. Volume densities of airspace wall, airspace and inter-airspace wall difference were determined by point counting. Inter-airspace wall difference (mean linear intercept (Lm)) was determined by counting the number of intercepts of a line of known length.
