In both panels, shaded columns designated "DiI" provide the size distribution of all retrogradely labelled neurons from which immunohistochemical data could be successfully collected (n = 94), regardless of their pattern of immunoreactivity. In A, neurons with different expression patterns of acid sensitive channels are compared, showing that neurons with TRPV1, either alone or in combination with ASIC3, have a peak in a smaller size group (20–25 μm) than those with ASIC3 alone. The latter are not subdivided in this panel according to their NF68-immunoreactivity. This is done in B, demonstrating larger size of NF68-positive compared to NF68-negative ASIC3-immunoreactive neurons.
