Inhalation of salmeterol or salbutamol attenuate TNFα production in NTHi infected lungs in vivo. Mice inhaled salmeterol or salbutamol before intranasal inoculation with 107 CFU NTHi. Some mice were injected with propranolol i.p. (10 mg/kg every 2 h). A, Salmeterol reduced TNFα production in NTHi infected lung homogenates 6 h post-challenge. The effect of salmeterol on TNFα production 6 h post-infection was mimicked by salbutamol and antagonized by propranolol in lung homogenates (B) and BALF (C). Values are mean ± SEM of 8 mice per group. * P < 0.05 versus vehicle and versus salmeterol + propranolol.
