Experimental protocol over time. The animals are followed during a four hours period. After the instillation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Pa) or isotonic saline, rhAPC (APC) or saline is injected continuously during the next four hours of the experiment. After anesthesia and tracheotomy, 111I-labeled albumin is injected intravenously (IV), 150 minutes after the beginning of the experiment. Sixty minutes prior to sacrifice, 125 I-labeled albumin is instilled intratracheally (IT). The animals are then sacrificed for each of the functionnal studies described in the method section.
