  1. All PBECs included in the study were provided by Lonza or the NORM and TIP study within the University Medical Center Groningen. COPD patients were included on a basis of FEV1 < 50% of predicted, FEV1/FVC < 70% and ≥20 pack-years for GOLD stage IV. All control subjects had FEV/FVC > 70% and FEV1 > 90% of predicted. FEV/FVC, FEV1 predicted and pack-years from Lonza cells are unknown.
