Functional and histologic evidence of compensatory lung growth after pneumonectomy (Day 0). A) Lung volumes obtained by a FlexiVent maximal vital capacity maneuver (named TLC by SCIREQ). The mouse was allowed to exhale to residual volume then ventilated with a 3 sec ramp to a 3 sec plateau at 30 cmH2O pressure. The measured volume was expressed as a percent of Day 0 post-pneumonectomy baseline. Each data point reflects the mean of N = 3 mice ± 1 SD; 3 TLC maneuvers per mouse. B) Control and C) Ki-67 (Clone TEC-3, Dako, Hamburg, Germany) immunohistochemistry of the lung during the "growth" phase (Day 6) demonstrated scattered positive cells providing evidence of proliferation within the alveolar septa (arrow, bar = 25 um).
