Both the endothelial layer and the lumen of vessels were enlarged in obliterative bronchiolitis (OB) patients. Vessels were stained with antibody to von Willebrand factor, and a characteristic vessel and a zoomed part of the endothelial layer of the vessel are shown in panels a and b, respectively. Panel c shows a differential interference contrast image from the same part of the tissue as in panel a. Scale bar (50 μm) is indicated on the differential interference-contrast image. Original magnification: 20×. The total area of the endothelial layer was significantly enlarged in the patient group compared to the controls. The total area of the lumen of the vessels was significantly enlarged in the patient group compared to the controls.
