Dr Reynold Panettieri, Professor and Vice Chancellor for Translational Medicine and Science at Rutgers University, has pioneered studies that focus on mesenchymal cells modulating airway inflammation that is important in asthma and COPD. His work focuses on signal transduction pathways that mediate glucocorticoid insensitivity, smooth muscle proliferation and excitation-contraction coupling. Dr Panettieri was the Deputy Director for the Center of Excellence in Environmental Toxicology at the University of Pennsylvania and Adjunct Professor at the Wistar Institute in Philadelphia.
Exciting new opportunities now exist in the translation of fundamental research into new therapeutic agents, unique biomarkers, and hopefully the cure of lung and airway diseases. The rapid dissemination of this knowledge not only to colleagues in research and in medicine, but also to the lay public will greatly enhance the value of lung research. Open access to respiratory research eliminates obstacles and challenges to dissemination of such knowledge and provides a platform for rapid discovery.
